Zum Einschlafen zu sagen

A Collective Translation by German 301

Rainer Maria Rilke (1902)

I’d like to sing to someone

To sit and to be by someone

I’d like to cradle you and sing to you softly

And accompany you as you drift in and out of sleep.

I want to be the only one in the house

Who knew the night was cold

And listen throughin and throughout

In you, in the world, in the woods.

The striking clocks call one another,

And one sees the bottom of time.

And yet a strange man goes by below

and disturbs a strange dog.

Afterwards is silence. I lay

My eyes wide upon you and hold you gently

And let you go, when something stirs in the dark.
